NEW YORK, NY – We’ve reached Memorial Day Weekend and things are looking brighter for the Bronx Bombers, while the Mets are having some problems in the Bat Cave. Over on the ice, the Penguins are a step closer to winning the Stanley Cup. And Angry Ward’s Warriors are close to getting dumped out of the playoffs after their history-making season.
Since my last piece, where I compared Jacoby Ellsbury to Carl Pavano, he’s been on a tear. He’s hitting close to .360 in the month of May and has been an integral part of the resurgence of this Yankee squad. The team has returned to respectability after toiling in the wastelands of being 8 games under .500. Ellsbury is bent on making me eat my words. But I’m not having it. Not yet anyway. It is a long season and there is plenty of time for Jacoby to screw the pooch. Alex Rodriguez went 0-4 in his return to the lineup yesterday afternoon. The Yankees will need him to produce with the injuries elsewhere in the lineup.
Over at first base for the Yanks, Mark Teixeira is on the shelf with yet another injury. Mr. Glass plays a great first base defensively, but if the Yankees needed a player to hit below .200 and always be injured they could just hire Short Matt. Thankfully for the Bombers, this is the last year of Tex’s albatross-like contract. The Yanks have a few of those that will be coming off the books in the coming years and Brian Cashman will be free to do it all over again. Cashman is always on the lookout for the next aging player to throw too much money and too many years at.
Over in Queens the Dark Knight is having a tough go of things and he may be close to losing his spot in the rotation. Terry Collins says that isn’t happening, but his hand may be forced if Harvey continues his batting practice pitching routine. The Amazin’s come into the holiday weekend a game behind the Nationals. The good thing for the Mets is that the rest of their starting rotation is pitching well.
The NHL playoffs enter their final phase this weekend as the Penguins dispatched of the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 last night. They’ll meet the San Jose Sharks in the Finals after the Sharks gave St. Louis the blues, as talked about here with a picture of Derek Jeter’s hot fiancee with a “Shark Bite”. For the next couple of weeks everybody across the United States and Canada with the exception of western Pennsylvania and parts of Nova Scotia will be rooting for the Sharks. Here’s hoping that San Jose can keep evil from triumphing.
Over on the hard court, the Warriors have their backs against the ropes in the Western Conference Finals against the Thunder. After being world beaters in the regular season, Golden State is finding things a bit tougher in the playoffs. Steph Curry says he’s nursing an injury and is only playing at 70%. Excuses excuses. If the Warriors don’t win the championship then nobody will remember the regular season they had. Angry Ward’s Whining Warriors will be forgotten, just like A-Dubya’s 2001 Mariners.
