DENVER, CO – A bunt. On this day in 1947 Jackie Robinson recorded his first-ever Major League hit… and it was a bunt. That bunt went a long way to changing the lives of so many African Americans that you could call it the bunt heard round the world. Something so small and yet so significant changed the world.
As we begin to see a light in the future that is an open society, we invariably will be required to bunt before we can swing for the fences. How we go about our bunts will dictate who in our society will be set up with runners in scoring position and who will foul out in the nine hole leaving an empty slate for the one hitters of life.
When I think about the $1200 pitch that was thrown to a large amount of Americans this week, I think about the opportunities we have to bunt our way back into spending in a way that will most greatly impact the economy. With that I have polled some of the Greatest Bunters of All-Time and asked them what they would do if they had $1200 in this situation.
Lee Mazilli – “Well, $1200 isn’t much but if you have a friend that wants to go in on something with you then I know a guy who knows a guy who has a friend who can get us high quality nose candy that we can turn into at least 15 grand on the street. It will be a STRONG offer. You in?”
Pete Rose – “$1200? Dollars? I know what you think I am going to say… the ponies are still running but that aint it. You should call my accountant. He isn’t afraid of going back to prison and he will find a way to L L see your tax bill down to zero!”
Kenny Lofton – “Well $1200 is about a week’s stipend for one player on the Arizona Men’s basketball team so I probably need to kick in my alumni payoffs.” Yes, Kenny played basketball for U of A!
Otis Nixon – “What Mazilli said!”
Juan Pierre – “1200? That’s about how much I owe Peter Gammons for his hall of fame vote.”
Jason Giambi – “You called about bunting? The girls don’t like that as much these days and I was never very good at it. But since you called… What Mazilli said.”
Brett Butler – “The other members of your list need Jesus.”
As for me. I bought new springs and suspension bushings for my project car as well as next year’s ski pass. If you aren’t spending money the second you get it then you just aren’t ‘Murican.
Stay safe everyone. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Golf returns on 6/11. Maybe even Short Matt (who posts tomorrow) will view it as a sport after the sports void. Oh, and it looks like my STL Blues will retain the Stanley Cup two years in a row. That is something the NY Rangers have never done.
