SPANISH HARLEM – News came down on Tuesday that Trent Grisham accepted the New York Yankees qualifying offer of one-year, $22.025. I don’t think this was something that Brian Cashman thought would happen, though he had to know that it would be possibility. Let’s look at how this affects the Yankees and if it was the right move for the team.
The End of Cody Bellinger?
It is well known that the Yankees want Bellinger back but Grishman’s contract certainly this is a complicated situation. It is projected that Cody could land a deal for 6 years, 165 million and given their current payroll, would the Yankees be willing to make that type of commitment to keep him in pinstripes? I’m hoping he comes back because he played very well and provided great versatility on defense, being capable of playing all outfield spots including first base. While he was no Juan Soto on offense, he is certainly someone they need if they want to compete for a championship next year.
Which leads me to my next question… What happens to Jasson Dominguez?
The Yankees have had a hard time developing everyday players in the last 10 years or so and Dominguez needs to play if you expect him to reach his potential. Sure, the left field defense was quite there but you saw a guy that has a smart eye and patience at the plate. I’m intrigued to see if the Yankees will give him consistent at-bats knowing that they will be paying Grishman and possibility Bellinger the type of money they are expected to make next season.

Another question we must put out there is… was this a one wonder for Grishman, who had the best season of his 6-year career. While we all complained about Dominguez defense, by all accounts Grish was much when you look analytics. It could be said that it is a risk the Yankees shouldn’t have made but now they have their work cut out for them.
That’s it for now, please come back tomorrow for more great content from Jackson Sternberg.
