MILWAUKEE, WI – There’s something brewing in the Midwest and baseball fans need to take notice. While everyone expects the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees to meet in the Fall Classic, the Milwaukee Brewers, a team of Average Joe’s, have the best record in baseball.
While the NY Mets, a team that’s number one in payroll, lingers in last place, the Brewers who hold the nineteenth slot in salaries have been resting in the first place position for most of the season.
The credit starts at the top with owner Mark Attanasio and President of Baseball Operations/General Manager Matt Arnold. The Bronx-born Attanasio idolized NY Yankee Mickey Mantle, and he apparently knows what a superstar is. Over the last few years, the Brewers parted with their so-called “stars” like Willy Adames, Hunter Renfroe, Josh Hader, Devin Williams, Corbin Burnes and the latest in Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta which led to a roster turnover that actually improved the teams record over the last few years.
Attanasio showed real balls by letting Craig Counsell, the winningest manager in team history, bolt to the Chicago Cubs. In doing so he handed the skipper job to Counsell’s bench coach, Pat Murphy. The move has worked out perfectly as Murphy snagged the Manager of the Year Award the past two seasons. It also looks like a third straight award is in the making for 2026. Players like Gary Sanchez, Jake Bauers and Chris Yelich rave about their manager. Murphy once told me how hard it is to win an MLB game, but when you look at the standings the last two seasons, plus this one, the win record shows he’s an easy rider. Murph presses how the players have to be locked in at this level, and right now he owns the master key.
The humble skipper credits his coaches, players and the front office for where they stand today.
