FLUSHING, NY – On July 19th another number worn by a New York Met will be put out of circulation. David Wright’s number 5 will become the eleventh number retired by the team who shunned its history, until Steve Cohen took over ownership. Jackie Robinson’s number 42 is also included in that group.
Wright’s number 5 will become the fifth number retired under Cohen’s tenure which began in September of 2020. Cohen, an avid Mets fan who grew up in Great Neck, Long Island, needs to do something else before that July date of honoring his team’s Captain.
He needs to look up above his left field foul pole and notice that some of the shine on the plaques of these retired numbers has dimmed, and I mean that literally. Any fan who isn’t high on weed or drunk on Budweiser can clearly see that the retired numbers of Mike Piazza, 31, Tom Seaver, 41, Gil Hodges, 14 and Casey Stengel, 37 have lost their luster and need an orange and blue paint job. The sun that shines above has done a number on them.
Uncle Stevie needs to purchase only two cans of Benjamin Moore to touch up the decay that developed over the years. If there’s a problem that the paint fee might interfere with the team’s budget, due to the Soto signing, then I will contribute the amount it takes to make it glow again.
