SPANISH HARLEM – If you’re a New York Yankees fan this is not the way you wanted or expected this team to start the season. You often hear the words “It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” yet I know for sure that some fans (me) are freaking out. The injuries have not helped at all but many didn’t expect this team to lose ugly games against teams the likes of Baltimore or Detroit.
Recent injuries to Giancarlo Stanton, Miguel Andujar and Troy Tulowitzki have made the manager’s job difficult, especially when it comes to throwing out an everyday line-up that you hope builds success together. The good thing is the Yankees have depth but now that will be tested and though the replacements wouldn’t on the team if everyone was healthy, you still want see them play well. Some people out there believed that Clint Frazier and Tyler Wade should have made this team out of Spring Training and now they will have an opportunity to show if they belong. Probably even more so for Wade, who should get a lot of playing time now that it’s been confirmed that Andujar will miss a couple of months, if not more.
This unit has failed to generate runs so far. The home runs are a big reason the Bombers excelled last year and probably will again this season. They drove in a lot of runs via the long ball and they still have the power to accomplish those same feats but it’s hard not to notice that when they stop hitting home runs. They don’t score many runs. In some respects you want to have a line-up that other teams fear – and the Yankees have that – but I still like to see those type of innings where a baseball team strings together a bunch of hits. How about keeping the line up moving and not striking out 18 time against the Tigers?
The Yanks may not be the type of team that plays little-ball but they should not have to rely on the 3-run homer for explosive innings. Sure, I may be freaking myself out but I hate to see strike out after strike out. I know they will play better eventually but I also would wish they weren’t so reliant on the long ball.
