Angry Ward Wednesday: Let Us Give Thanks… Vikings, John Candy, Knicks, Rangers, Mets

BRONX, NY – Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, which means you all still have around 24 hours to watch the classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, before being bombarded with Christmas flicks. So revel in lines like “I’ve never seen a guy get picked up by his testicles before” and “Larry Bird doesn’t do as much ball-handling in one night as you do in an hour,” while there’s still time. I don’t suspect there will be very many people visiting this site today, so I’ll keep it light on both content and tone. Here are a few things I’m thankful for:

The Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have always, far and away, been my favorite sports team. And if you know anything about their history, you know why I lost all my hair at an early age. That being said, they are currently sitting at 8-2 with their 3rd-string QB starting. I’m a realist, so I don’t have any grand illusions about this all going anywhere, but, for now, I’ll take it. The added bonus is the Packers sh!tting the bed without Aaron Rodgers. Talk about a one-player team. Nah, they didn’t need anyone like Colin Kaepernick. This Hundley kid is the next Don Majkowski.

New York CityAfter all these years, I still love where I live. NYC has had its share of tough times, tragedy, and terrible Times Square restaurants, but it still gives me a charge. And this time of year, Autumn, is just about the best. Street food carts smell better, friends who have moved away start sneaking back into town, and the Mets have gone into hibernation. There’s great music, great shows, and Knicks and Rangers fans are still somewhat tolerable for another month or so. To quote the classic film The Sweet Smell of Success,I love this dirty town.

Fried ChickenI would rather have good fried chicken than good turkey, any day of the week. I lobbied HARD for it this year, and failed. I will not give up. Some fights are really worth fighting.

FamilyThis one has nothing to do with Kristy McNichol or Dead Charlie Manson. You all know who you are. Many of you have written for this site, and some still do. Some have the misfortune of currently living with me, and others, like my big brother Chris, have already suffered through that circus. From Marble Hill amigos like JG Clancy and Tall Matt to long-timers like The Public Professor, Grote2DMax, and Cheesy Bruin, I consider every single one of you family. Yes, even you, Short Matt. But, where’s my booze? And holiday party at Bourbon Street.

That’s all folks. If there is a post tomorrow, I suppose it’s Buddy Diaz’ turn. He’s the most popular Buddy since Buddy the Elf. And you can find us on Twitter at @Angry_Ward, @MeetTheMatts & @Matt_McCarthy00, Instagram @MeetTheMatts and our Facebook page, Meet The Matts.

About Angry Ward 772 Articles
Angry Ward, who has admirers at the New York Times, is the quintessential angry sports fan but for one exception... he's flat-out funny. And the angrier he gets, the more amusing his work becomes. Psychiatrists say, "Angry Ward's 'anger' is a direct result of "Bronx/Mets syndrome: growing up in the Bronx as a Mets fan." As if that weren't enough, his Minnesota North Stars abandoned him for Dallas, forcing him to embrace The Wild the way Nancy Pelosi embraces Mitch McConnell at charity events. And while his Vikings only tease him with success, his Golden State Warriors actually win these days. A-Dubya is MTM's longest-tenured indentured servant, its Larry David and quite simply, "The Franchise." (Junoir Blaber disputes this). Vent, curse and giggle with him on Angry Ward Wednesdays.
