EL BARRIO, EL FALLS – Happy Monday! We actually had the Sunny week here in Buffalo, which was nice. Our COVID-19 cases keep climbing, however, and that is scary, as you just can’t trust the unwashed masses. But time to put The Rona aside and focus on today’s topics: Brady/Belichick Divorce, RIP Alex Trebek, Mets Cohen Cleans House:
Mets Clean House
Of course I’m late on this. As Short Matt already touched on this weekend, but wow. We all wanted… well I should say all of us Mets fans wanted, a fresh start and something new under the new owner Steve Cohen. Never did I imagine he would start by just completely cleaning house and emptying the whole executive suite, though. Everybody is gone and he starting from scratch. Now Sandy Alderson being the president and consultant isn’t the worst thing in the world but it is different than before. Considering the team has struggled and you’re trying to change the culture and atmosphere, it seems like the right call. It’s your team now, start fresh. Don’t burden your President with people he didn’t choose. He can get in people you trust. That’s very common in the business world, so we shouldn’t be surprised that as a successful biz guu, Cohen is applying that to the Mets. Who he brings in will be even more interesting now.
Brady/Belichick Divorce
The Jets are playing the Patriots tonight. The Patriots are at 2-5, which means that as of right now, in the Brady-Belichick divorce, Tompa Tom is clearly the winner. Tampa, who have added Antonio Brown, gotten Rob Gronkowski out of retirement, stand at 6 and 3. Sure, they did get their asses handed to them by New Orleans last night but they are second in their division with a chance to win it and definitely have a shot at the playoffs for the first time since 1867. Meanwhile, the post-Brady Pats have not looked the same. They haven’t had good quarterback play and although they’ve signed Cam Newton, he is not in the form and none of the backups have been able to replicate Matt Cassell, who was the star for the one year Brady was out with a knee injury. Right now Brady looks like the winner but I think it’s always going to be Belichick in the long run.
RIP Alex Trebek
Short Matt, Cheesy Bruin and Angry Ward are older than me, so I’m sure they can confirm getting old sucks. As you get older, you start seeing so many people from your childhood pass away. I don’t know how many people I’ve have written and RIP for this year alone but Alex Trebek really hurts. He’s right up there with last week’s Sean Connery. Considering the SNL skits between Connery and Trebek, this was a bit weird. But I am a huge Trebek fan. As a kid, of course we didn’t have cable and there wasn’t a lot you can watch once your parents took over for news. We often could get away with Jeopardy at 7pm, instead of ITN World News on Channel 21. When we got our own TV, we definitely did Jeopardy. I don’t know why but me and my brother were really competitive, yet there was no title or money for the winner. It was just saying you were smarter – despite only getting four five questions correct. Jeopardy was such a big part of my weeknights as a kid that losing Trebek is so sad… and it’s just another reminder that I am an old old man.
Anyway, thanks for reading and come back tomorrow for Blossoming Big Ben Whitney, who be full of piss and vinegar.
