Hey, Devin Williams: Just Say “I Sucked!”

NEW YORK, NY – It was on a Sunday night a long time ago when I was at the now-defunct hot-spot Club NV. The two-floored dance club was known for its Dee Jays, seductive patrons, and celebrity clientele. It was also well known by the police for its numerous stabbings and murders.

The club was located on the corner of Hudson and Spring Street, and the NY Knicks’ Charles Oakley strutted in. His team played the Indiana Pacers earlier in the day and I asked him if they won. Oakley responded, “Yeah we beat ‘em!” I then asked, “How did you do?” The Enforcer responded, “I sucked!”

With that answer, Oakley gained my respect. He told it like it was, which brings me to a couple of weeks ago, when the Yankees lost to the Tampa Bay Rays. The so-called best closer in baseball, Devin Williams, came in to finish an 8-4 Yankees lead and proceeded to blow it. Williams’ response to the media was, “Made some good pitches, made some bad ones. Not enough good ones today.”

Manager Aaron Boone said, “That’s part of being a closer in this league, and one as good as he’s been.” The problem is Williams hasn’t been good at all. Ever since his meltdown against the Mets that eliminated the Brewers from the playoffs, to his few outings in a Yankees uniform, Williams has been wack!

All Williams had to say was the same line Oakley said to me: “I sucked!” There’s nothing more to add after that except “See you tomorrow.” Williams griping about the Yankees’ facial hair policy just added more pressure to his performances.

Stay tuned to see how Williams f*cks up the games he’s called upon, which will lead to how he deals with the Bleacher Creatures. Yankee Stadium can easily turn into a hot stove by July, the same way Club NV was a hot stove on Sunday nights.
