Angry Ward Wednesday: Baseball Doldrums, Jets & Jints Fans Rejoice, and Pete Alonso Hears Sweet Music

BRONX, NY – Good Wednesday, one and all! Like most everyone else here in the Northeast, I’m trying to enjoy the last few gasps of summer and sunshine, while also looking forward to all the good stuff autumn brings. I mean, who says “no” to foliage and spiked cider and the Green Bay Packers blowing yet another huge lead… and this time against your favorite team? Let’s just jump right in.

What’s Happening in Baseball? No, really, this is a legit question. Since the two teams I give a damn about—Mariners and Mets (in that order)—have underachieved this year in spectacular fashion, I kinda checked out of anything MLB weeks ago. Wait, I see Seattle still has a 1% chance to make the playoffs. Yippee! This is truly that time of year when we watch all the teams we can’t stand get in and then hope for their speedy post-season exits. Yankees have Judge back (that, I heard) and that Cam Schlittler kid… so, unfortunately, they have a chance to make the series, especially in the putrid American League. This is depressing me. Let’s move on.

Giants and Jets Win! There’s nothing quite so much fun as New York’s football fans experiencing hope and happiness at the start of a new season. Let’s see who they beat. Well, apparently the J-E-T-S beat one of the worst teams in the league (maybe THE worst, save Cleveland) and the Giants finally got a home win against yet another Dallas Cowboys team that’s supposed to be vastly improved. Let’s get the easy one out of the way first: The Jets aren’t gonna win sh!t this year. They may beat the Dolphins twice, but who cares? I would say something close to the same about the Giants, but that NFC East doesn’t exactly seem stacked. The Commanders came thisclose to beating the Eagles last week and we all saw the Cowboys. Great offense, for sure, and George Pickens is really something special when he’s able to actually catch the ball. Could the G-Men win their division? Anything’s possible. But I still don’t trust an offense run through guys named Dart and Skattebo. Like that Nabers guy, though.

Texas Longhorns #1 Team in College Football. This will not last. Next.

Pete Alonso’s Homecoming. So, former Mets fan-favorite Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are in Queens for a three-game series. Last night Pete got a hero’s welcome from the Flushing Faithful, who also mustered a few “FIRE STEARNS” chants. His game-tying, majestic homer off the less-than-majestic Kodai Senga in the top the ninth was the stuff of Hollywood. That was a pretty big moment for The Polar Bear, whose team also won. By the way, I was alerted that Pete and Francisco Lindor were both on 299 career home runs. Pete got his, along with a CitiField curtain call.  That aside, it would be great to see them both hit #300 this series.

Okay, think I’m done for today. Columbia Lions Football home opener this weekend. JG Clancy’s buying the hot dogs. Chomp!

Come back tomorrow for Eagles superfan Buddy Diaz. Rumor has it, Buddy has a bedroom move called The Philly Special.

Angry Ward, who has admirers at the New York Times, is the quintessential angry sports fan but for one exception... he's flat-out funny. And the angrier he gets, the more amusing his work becomes. Psychiatrists say, "Angry Ward's 'anger' is a direct result of "Bronx/Mets syndrome: growing up in the Bronx as a Mets fan." As if that weren't enough, his Minnesota North Stars abandoned him for Dallas, forcing him to embrace The Wild the way Nancy Pelosi embraces Mitch McConnell at charity events. And while his Vikings only tease him with success, his Golden State Warriors actually win these days. A-Dubya is MTM's longest-tenured indentured servant, its Larry David and quite simply, "The Franchise." (Junoir Blaber disputes this). Vent, curse and giggle with him on Angry Ward Wednesdays.
