MANSFIELD, TX – Here in the shadow of Jerry’s World – the Cowboys home – AT&T Stadium – is but 2.4 miles from here. And I’m here as the in-stadium P.A. Announcer. Okay, it’s not for Dallas vs Green Bay. It’s for USA women vs Italy at Texas Health Mansfield Stadium.
October is that magical time of year when sports fans can watch football all weekend, baseball deep into the night, hockey after that, and still somehow complain that there is nothing on television.
This weekend, October 17–18, delivers another full plate of sporting drama, with playoff baseball, heavyweight college football matchups, the NFL and the opening game of the WNBA Finals. Somewhere, a remote control is already filing for workers’ compensation.
Baseball: Win or Go Home
The American League Championship Series between the Tampa and Cleveland takes center stage (does it?). The Guardians [of the Galaxy] need to turn their home field into a fortress rather than a revolving door, while Tampa Bay is looking to keep its postseason momentum rolling.
October baseball is wonderful because every pitch matters. It’s even better when the Yankees and Dodgers are out of it. Yes, I’m THAT petty.
College Football: Saturday’s Main Event
Saturday brings a heavyweight schedule, including The Ohio State University visiting Mark Cuban and Indiana, Alabama taking on Tennessee, Florida facing Texas and Notre Dame traveling to BYU.
These are the games that make college football special: enormous stakes, passionate crowds and coaches whose blood pressure probably deserves its own television contract.
One upset can transform a team’s season. One bad turnover can turn a Saturday afternoon into a family counseling session.
The NFL: Sunday’s Reality Check
The NFL takes over Sunday, with Dallas crawling Green Bay. Go Pack, go! And Da Bills travel to Las Vegas (they actually stayed out west after beating the Rams, so consider that when you bet against them because of time zone or jetlag issues. t among the featured matchups.
For Cowboys fans, a trip to Lambeau Field is another opportunity to dream big. For Packers fans, it is a chance to remind Dallas that they suck.
The NFL remains a league of parity. Nearly every team enters believing it can win make the playoffs, but by Monday morning, several fan bases are researching quarterbacks in next year’s draft.
Hockey and the WNBA Join the Party
The NHL schedule supplies its usual hard-hitting entertainment, while the WNBA Finals begin Saturday with the Atlanta Dream facing the Golden State Valkyries.
The Finals are a reminder that women’s basketball has become an increasingly compelling part of the American sports calendar. The stakes are enormous, the talent is undeniable, and the competition deserves the spotlight.
The Bottom Line
This weekend offers something for every sports fan: playoff tension, college football rivalries, NFL drama, hockey and championship basketball. Avoid making any plans that require leaving the couch.
Very much looking to working as the P.A. Announcer for this one… an honor to do so. Get there if you can, Texas!
