Angry Ward Wednesday: The Endless Bummer – Beer & Loathing in Late July

Good ol' fashioned PhotoShop graphic, not A.I., as per Angry Ward & JG Clancy

BRONX, NY – Well, kids, we’ve officially moved into that portion of summer where the days are getting shorter, young people start dreading those first few mentions of “back to school,” and everyone is desperately trying to cling to some sort of vacation mentality. It’s really not a winnable battle; never was and never will be. That’s why I stopped fighting it long ago. These days, I lean heavily intoend of summer” dread and despair. Here’s how it works. Find those things, especially in sports, where you can conveniently place your anger, indifference, and resignation. I’ll get you started.

Meaningless Baseball. I’m of course talking about the Mets and, honestly, a LOT of other teams… but mostly the Mets. I’m sure you know by now that the Mets are offering $10 vouchers with every ticket purchased from now to the end of the season. These SheaShack Sawbucks are good towards food, drink, and Mets merchandise but, unfortunately, not towards buying out David Stearns’ contract or making Bobby Bonilla Day go away forever. By the way, good luck finding something to buy for ten dollars at Citi Field or any other venue in NYC. Anyway, the 2026 Mets suck, and we should celebrate by either napping or wasting our last few days of summer freedom chasing $10 coupons.

LeBron James Sixers Stories. You think torrential rains are sending people in the Northeast to higher ground? You ain’t seen nothing yet. The “LeBron James Signing with the Philadelphia 76ers” news cycle is just getting started. If you live anywhere east of the Mississippi, you should be getting iPhone alerts to get the heck out of Dodge. It will be like this for a while, at least until the 24/7 NFL news tsunami wipes away everything in its path. And it never tires of talking about the Dallas Cowboys. Speaking of football…

NFL Preseason Garbage. Back in the day the NFL’s preseason nonsense was referred to, correctly, as “Exhibition Games.” Sadly, they aren’t even that anymore. Not much on exhibit besides a bunch of guys auditioning for special teams spots and pretty much everyone else trying not to get injured. The beginning of preseason is only a little over a week away with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, OH on Thursday the 6th. You know who’s playing? Exactly. Also, Raiders fans? Kirk Cousins will be your starter to start training camp. Get ready to get excited.

MLB Trade Deadline. Take it from me, August 3rd will be a good day to do laundry. Enjoy!

Okay, I don’t want to overextend myself today. Besides, someone in MtM Command Central has been asleep at the switch this week when it comes to posting in a timely fashion. Best, not to get too ambitious. Do I ever? But come back tomorrow for Buddy Diaz, who has star written all over him.

Angry Ward, who has admirers at the New York Times, is the quintessential angry sports fan but for one exception... he's flat-out funny. And the angrier he gets, the more amusing his work becomes. Psychiatrists say, "Angry Ward's 'anger' is a direct result of "Bronx/Mets syndrome: growing up in the Bronx as a Mets fan." As if that weren't enough, his Minnesota North Stars abandoned him for Dallas, forcing him to embrace The Wild the way Nancy Pelosi embraces Mitch McConnell at charity events. And while his Vikings only tease him with success, his Golden State Warriors actually win these days. A-Dubya is MTM's longest-tenured indentured servant, its Larry David and quite simply, "The Franchise." (Junoir Blaber disputes this). Vent, curse and giggle with him on Angry Ward Wednesdays.
