Angry Ward Wednesday: Brew Believer, Rams Getting Sheared, and Taking the Starch Out of Arch

BRONX, NY – Welcome to another wonderful Wednesday in Rocktober. There’s kind of a ton going on in sports right now. The League Championship series are happening in baseball, NFL football is pretty much at the quarter pole, college football is really starting to get interesting, and a new NBA season is only a week away. Let’s talk about some of this stuff.

The Brew Crew Has Bite. I don’t know, but maybe there’s something to having the best record in baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers won 103 games this year, and are currently up 2-0 in the NLCS on the mighty Dodgers. For those of you who forgot, the Dodgers were supposed to run away with their third straight World Series this year, but Milwaukee’s clearly got different ideas. This team seems eerily similar to the 2015 Kansas City Royals squad that absolutely handled the Mets and won it all. Guess we’ll see.

Go Guardians. In the AL, I simply can’t root for Tampa. I love them for kicking the Yankees‘ teeth in, but I gotta go with Cleveland. How can you not pull for a franchise that hasn’t won a title since Harry Truman was President? Hope they can get there.

Lost Angeles. Like their baseball brethren, the Los Angeles Rams started the NFL season as the clear favorite to win it all… yet here they sit at 2-3 in third place in the NFC West. Wha happen? The season is still very young, but the Rams seem a tad old and a bit of a mess. They just canned their portly kicker Harrison Mevis after Monday Night’s loss to Buffalo. That’s too bad, because he really resembled vintage 1970s toy, Super Jock Kicker. Him aside, Myles Garrett is still injured, Aaron Donald is still playing himself into shape, Matt Stafford and Davante Adams are still ancient, and Puka Nacua is still a threat to score a touchdown or get suspended for the season at any moment. Good luck, lads!

Arch Madness Simmers a Bit. College Football can be fairly cruel, especially for young players who have ridiculously-high expectations placed upon them. Perhaps no one is dealing with this more than Junior Texas quarterback Arch Manning. As soon as this kid was out of high school you already heard rumblings of NFL teams who may want to “Tank for Arch.” This was before he even threw a pass for the Longhorns. Anyway, that noise is dying down a bit, as he’s not exactly having a Heisman-worthy season. Maybe this is actually a good thing for him. It’s anybody’s guess if he’ll return for his senior season at Texas but, either way, hope the hype continues to get tamped down.

I think that’s it for today. I leave it for Buddy Diaz to discuss the Knicks shutting down contract extension talks with two of their key players. He’ll be here tomorrow, I assume.

Angry Ward, who has admirers at the New York Times, is the quintessential angry sports fan but for one exception... he's flat-out funny. And the angrier he gets, the more amusing his work becomes. Psychiatrists say, "Angry Ward's 'anger' is a direct result of "Bronx/Mets syndrome: growing up in the Bronx as a Mets fan." As if that weren't enough, his Minnesota North Stars abandoned him for Dallas, forcing him to embrace The Wild the way Nancy Pelosi embraces Mitch McConnell at charity events. And while his Vikings only tease him with success, his Golden State Warriors actually win these days. A-Dubya is MTM's longest-tenured indentured servant, its Larry David and quite simply, "The Franchise." (Junoir Blaber disputes this). Vent, curse and giggle with him on Angry Ward Wednesdays.
